Walmart Confirms Fourways Mall as Location for first South African Store

The location of Walmart’s inaugural branded store in South Africa has officially been confirmed: it will open at Fourways Mall in Gauteng, occupying the prominent space formerly held by Game.
This highly anticipated announcement follows Walmart’s commitment made in September 2025 to launch its first own-brand stores in the country before the year’s end.
While Walmart already has a substantial footprint in South Africa through its ownership of Massmart, which operates chains like Makro, Game, and Builders Warehouse, this move signifies the direct entry of the iconic global brand.
The Fourways Mall store represents Walmart's first retail operation in South Africa directly under its flagship Walmart banner, rather than through its established Massmart brands. This new branch will occupy the space previously held by the local retailer, Game.
Walmart International President and CEO, Kath McLay, confirmed that the South African stores are designed to offer a wide range of merchandise, ensuring customers can access everything they need in one place.
Shoppers can expect to find fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, and technology. The retailer plans to organize its inventory to include affordable groceries and a selection of family, home, and entertainment items, all presented in bright, well-designed stores with wide aisles for an improved shopping experience.
“Customers can also look forward to digital capabilities to enhance their shopping journey,” the retailer said.
This expansion not only promises a positive economic impact by creating job opportunities but also fosters a sense of community involvement and local engagement, as Walmart seeks to align with the values and principles of the South African market.
