V&A Waterfront to get rid of all plastic straws by December

One of the biggest shopping centres in Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront is on a mission to get rid of all plastic straws on its premises by year-end.

This is according to a report by Business Insider, which states that the mall has 84 food and beverage tenants and 46 of them still use plastic straws.

The report added that the mall also has a long-term goal which is to also to cut single-use plastic bags by 40% by the end of 2020 and cutting single-use water bottles by 20% by 2021.

To achieve this goal, it started putting up new signs in parking lots to remind shoppers to bring their own bags as well as several pop-up stores at the entrances where customers can purchase bags made from discarded plastic bottles, run in partnership with Pick n Pay and Woolworths.

The V&A Waterfront has opened an R17 million on-site Waste treatment and Recycling facility, which started operating in January 2018.

Since it opened, the mall has been able to divert 38% of the waste on the property from landfill.
