Urgent Volvo EX30 Recall: Battery Fault Poses Fire Risk for South African Drivers
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued an urgent recall notice for 372 Volvo EX30 vehicles in South Africa, following a notification from Volvo Car South Africa regarding a critical safety defect involving the vehicle's high-voltage battery.
The recall affects specific EX30 Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance models (Model Years 2024 to 2026) that were sold in Gauteng from 29 December 2025.
The Risk: Potential Thermal Event
According to Volvo South Africa, the recall was initiated due to a potential fault in the high-voltage (HV) battery system. Technical investigations have revealed that, in rare instances, the battery may overheat when charged to high levels.
This overheating could potentially lead to a "thermal event," posing a fire risk to the vehicle and its occupants.
Immediate Action Required While Volvo Car South Africa prepares to rectify the fault, the automaker has issued a critical interim instruction to all owners of the affected vehicles: Do not charge the vehicle above 70%.
Limiting the maximum charge level significantly reduces the strain on the battery and mitigates the risk of overheating until a permanent software or hardware fix is applied.
Volvo’s Commitment to Safety
In a statement regarding its general safety protocols, Volvo emphasised that its commitment to consumer protection extends beyond the factory floor.
"At Volvo Cars, safety is at the core of everything we do," the company stated. "Despite our thorough testing and follow-up, issues may occur that can be traced back to the construction and building of the car. In rare situations, we need to make a recall... particularly when we encounter issues that may affect your safety, even if there are no reports of incidents."
What Owners Should Do Consumers who own a Volvo EX30 purchased in late 2025 or early 2026 are urged to treat this notification with high priority.
-
Check your model: Confirm if your vehicle is a Single Motor Extended Range or Twin Motor Performance variant.
-
Adjust settings: Immediately set your charging limit to 70% via the vehicle's central interface or mobile app.
-
Contact a dealer: Arrange for an inspection and repair at the nearest authorised Volvo dealership.
The NCC and Volvo Car South Africa have confirmed that all corrective work related to this safety recall will be carried out at no cost to the consumer.
