Samsung Bets on "Jumbo" Screens and Micro RGB Tech to Fend Off Rivals in 2026
Samsung Electronics has officially pulled the curtain back on its 2026 home theatre lineup, signalling a strategic shift toward "jumbo" televisions and advanced backlighting technology designed to cement its dominance in an increasingly competitive market, Bloomberg reports.
Unveiled at the CES technology conference in Las Vegas, the new range targets what Samsung describes as the "fastest-growing TV segment"—super big screens.
The Rise of Micro RGB In a move to improve colour accuracy on LCD-based 4K televisions, Samsung is debuting a technology called "Micro RGB."
According to Bloomberg, this new system "rejiggers the backlighting system in LCD TVs" by replacing the traditional white or blue backlight with a structure of individual red, green, and blue backlights. Samsung claims this allows for a wider range of colours and greater realism compared to previous models.
While Samsung introduced a 115-inch Micro RGB model in September with a staggering $30,000 price tag, the company told Bloomberg it is now bringing this technology to a broader range of sizes for 2026, spanning from 55 inches up to an enormous 130-inch set.
Intensifying the OLED War, Samsung is also ramping up pressure on rival LG Electronics in the high-end OLED category.
Bloomberg notes that for 2026, Samsung continues to differentiate its offerings with "Glare Free" displays and "quantum dot" panels. The new flagship S95H OLED model features minor exterior design tweaks but boasts a significant performance upgrade: it is 35% brighter than the previous generation.
Meanwhile, the step-down S90H series now includes a low-glare screen and a 15% improvement in brightness, according to the report.
AI and "The Frame" Artificial Intelligence remains a cornerstone of Samsung’s strategy. Bloomberg reports that the 2026 models will support multiple AI agents, including Samsung’s Bixby as well as rival assistants from Microsoft Corp. and Perplexity AI Inc., helping users plan trips or summarise content.
A new "AI Sound Controller" will also allow viewers to independently adjust dialogue and background music levels.
Finally, Samsung’s popular lifestyle TV, The Frame, is getting a "dramatic up-sizing" with a new 98-inch version. However, Bloomberg highlights a notable hardware change: the standard Frame will now have its HDMI inputs built directly into the set, ditching the separate "One Connect Box" that previously hid unsightly wires.
South African availability and pricing for these tv's have yet to be announced.
