Marriott International Joins FoodForward SA to Tackle Hunger on World Food Day
On World Food Day, Marriott International supported FoodForward SA (FFSA) in addressing South Africa’s food insecurity crisis, where 10 million tonnes of surplus food go to waste while 30 million people face hunger daily.
More than 25 volunteers from six hotels within Marriott International’s portfolio packed boxes of staple groceries - including maize meal, rice, samp, tinned fish, baked beans, and canned fruit - at FFSA facilities in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Each 20kg box is designed to feed a family of four for a month and was distributed through FFSA’s network of beneficiary organisations.
This effort reflects the World Food Day theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” and FFSA’s mission to recover surplus food and redirect it to communities in need.
“Food insecurity is one of South Africa’s most pressing challenges, and World Food Day reminds us that we all have a role to play,” said Johann Nortje, Chairperson of Marriott’s Southern Africa Business Council. “By working with FoodForward SA, we help ensure surplus food doesn’t go to waste but reaches families who need it most. Every box packed is a step toward turning excess into nourishment and hope.”
Employees from various hotel brands in the Marriott portfolio, including Protea Hotels by Marriott, The Westin, AC Hotels by Marriott, and Marriott Hotels, took part in the packing events. The Westin Cape Town team also prepared a lunch for volunteers, showcasing how simple, wholesome meals can be created using the same ingredients distributed to communities.
This initiative forms part of Marriott International’s global commitment to sustainability and community impact, supporting local efforts to tackle food insecurity and promote food systems that leave no one behind.
