Gotta Build ‘Em All: LEGO Unveils First-Ever Pokémon Sets with South African Pricing

After 30 years of waiting, two of the world’s biggest pop culture giants have finally joined forces. The LEGO Group and The Pokémon Company International have unveiled their first-ever line of construction sets, allowing fans to build iconic creatures from the franchise.

Scheduled for release on 27 February 2026, which is a day celebrated globally as Pokémon Day, the launch features five fan-favourite Pokémon across three distinct sets.

However, local enthusiasts should prepare their wallets: pricing for the South African market has been confirmed by LEGO Certified Stores, and the flagship set commands a premium price tag.

Adults Only?

Unlike traditional playsets, this debut wave is explicitly targeted at the "18+" adult collector market. These are high-detail display pieces designed to tap into the nostalgia of older fans who grew up with the original games, rather than toys intended for the sandbox.

The SA Lineup and Pricing

Local pricing has been set, revealing that South Africans will be paying slightly more than their European counterparts, a standard trend due to import costs and exchange rate fluctuations.

Here is what is hitting shelves next month:

1. Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise (Set #72153)

  • Price: R12,999

  • The Detail: The showstopper of the collection. This massive 6,838-piece set features the fully evolved forms of the original Kanto starter Pokémon. Each figure features unique articulation and rests on a detailed action base filled with "Easter eggs" and biome-specific details.

  • Context: At nearly R13,000, this is one of the most expensive sets on the market, positioning it as a serious investment for "super fans."

2. Pikachu and Poké Ball (Set #72152)

  • Price: R3,999

  • The Detail: A dynamic 2,050-piece build that freezes the franchise mascot in time. The set depicts Pikachu leaping out of a Poké Ball in a battle stance, complete with a lightning rod base and a "25" distinct mark to signify its Pokédex number.

3. Eevee (Set #72151)

  • Price: R1,199

  • The Detail: The most accessible entry point for collectors. This 587-piece model captures the charm of the Normal-type Pokémon with a movable tail, head, and expressive face.

The "Scavenger Hunt"

To build hype leading up to the release, LEGO has launched a digital scavenger hunt running until launch day. Fans can hunt for hidden clues across LEGO and Pokémon digital channels. The grand prize is a trip to the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco.

Availability

South African fans can purchase these sets starting 27 February 2026. While LEGO Certified Stores have listed the items on their "Coming Soon" pages with a "Notify Me" option, pre-orders are not yet open.

As the lines between pop culture collectables and high-end hobbies blur, this collaboration marks a significant moment for the toy industry in 2026. Whether local fans will embrace the high price point of the flagship set remains to be seen, but the nostalgia factor is undeniably powerful.
